Friction Free Shaving Review by Gemma – January 2020

First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to Hannah over at Friction Free Shaving for sending over this box to review!

For those of you who are not familiar with them, Friction Free Shaving (or FFS) are a monthly shaving subscription to bring you all your shaving needs! I first reviewed for them just over a year ago and I remember loving the quality of the razor and the shave that it gave me- so is it still the same? Let’s find out!

If you missed my unboxing of this, you can catch it now in the video section of our facebook group or on our YouTube channel here (and subscribe if you haven’t already!):

The box is designed to fit through most letterboxes (it doesn’t fit through mine as I live in a flat and have a smaller letterbox) and comes in an outer postage bag to protect it from the elements. It has the company logo on, so there is no mistaking who it is from, and when I opened it I found all this:

I am super impressed! The first thing I noticed was a leaflet explaining about how you can recycle your old blades with them, which is an amazing idea! You simply go to their website and request a return postage bag, which you can then use to return all your used blades to be recycled. On the other side were details of an offer to get some replacement blades at 25% if you don’t want a handle as well.

There was also a booklet which had more information about the products inside. And what were they?

The first item I took out was a razor head cover and drawstring bag in a turquoise/aqua colour. These would be great to use to store your razor and keep it safe for travelling, or even just a weekend away.

There was also a blade cover and shower holder, which sticks to the wall in your shower so that you can grab it easily, without cutting yourself thanks to the blade cover, which also prevents moisture from getting to them. Little extras you didn’t know you needed!

The next item was the blades themselves. Encased in a little plastic frame, there were 4 sets of German engineered razor blades to attach to the razor head. These have 6 diamond coated blades and a precision trimmer blade for a closer shave, as well as an aloe vera lubricating strip to prevent irritation. I also like how easy they are to attach and detach from the razor head too! The blades are also suitable for use by both vegetarians and vegans, which is useful to know for those of you who are!

The razor head was next, with a lovely blue, rubber grip and metal handle. The handle is ergonomically designed for an easy grip and the head is flexible to get to those hard to reach places (hello, back of the knees!). You can get this engraved as an option too, but more on that later!

The next 3 items were their ‘Smooth, Remove, Soothe’ products. The first was the Pre Shave Scrub. This has been formulated by dermatologists and contains naturally beautiful ingredients such as:

  • Manuka Honey, which is an anti inflammatory, repairing and moisturising wonder.
  • Walnut Husk- a gentle and all natural exfoliant.
  • Coconut Oil- Natural and moisturising with Vitamin E.
  • Almond Milk, an excellent source of Vitamin E and is also a known antioxidant due to its natural healing properties.
  • Cocoa Butter, which is high in antioxidants, is anti-inflammatory and provides deep hydration.

So with all that goodness in one tube, it is safe to say I loved this last time and I love it even more now, as they are certified cruelty free and have the leaping bunny too! To use this, you simply shower or bathe for a few minutes to soften the skin and open up the pores before using a 50p sized blob and massaging it into the skin to remove dead skin cells, soften the hairs and prevent ingrown hairs after shaving. You then rinse it off with warm water and move to the next step!

The next step, and product, is the Mid Shave Cream. This cream has a cationic charge that softens the hairs and makes them stand on end for a close shave! Clever! It has coconut oil, Manuka honey and shea butter which helps the blades glide over the skin. You again apply a 50p sized blob to the area you are shaving and then wait around 15 seconds for it to take effect. Again, this is cruelty free and provided me with a smooth and close shave with no nicks or irritation!

The final step, and product, is the Post Shave Balm. This uses 3 ingredients that are known for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hydrating properties- Manuka Honey, Cocoa Butter and Almond Milk, which is also a source of skin loving Vitamin E. You apply a generous layer of this to freshly shaved skin to moisturise, smooth and prevent ingrown hairs. This is again cruelty free and gave me the softest, smoothest skin ever! I am so impressed!

This option was the full shaving set, called the Lilly Box, which is priced at £33. However, there are a few options you can go for!

The prices start at just £9 per month for the razor head and blades. This then goes up with any optional extras you may wish to add.

The optional extras are:

  • Engraving £6
  • Scrub £6
  • Shave Cream £6
  • Shave Balm £6
  • Razor Head protector £4
  • 6 Wax Strips £3
  • Travel Pouch £6
  • Glass nail file £6
  • Lip Balm £6

The ordering process is very simple- you first select the colour of the razor and then if you want the optional engraving (details above). You then select how often you shave and add in any of the above optional extras you want. You also get a free nail file and blade cover with your first set!

It is important to note as well that these options can be edited, so if you want the full shebang in the first month but then only want a few items, or just the blades etc the next month, you can personalise this to suit your needs and what you may be running out of.

All these options come with free delivery and the choice of either monthly or bi-monthly deliveries.

My Verdict.

I loved this last time and I love it this time too. The convenience of this is what makes this subscription so great- how often do we forget to buy razors, shaving creams or wax strips? This subscription makes it easy and provides us with our essentials at exactly when we need them. This would also make a great gift. I can see why they have won so many accolades, including being the number 1 rated razor subscription on TrustPilot!
