Macro Meals UK Review by Gemma – November 2018

First of all, I would just like to start by saying a huge thank you to Tom over at Macro Meals for sending me their amazing box!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Macro Meals, essentially, they are a meal prep delivery service. You can choose to either make the meals yourself by using the Randomiser option and telling them what ingredients you do and don’t like, or you can have the meals delivered already prepared in tubs- just tell them what foods you like and dislike and they will do the rest!

All meals are made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and are sent in secure freezer bags and boxes, delivered the very next day for optimum freshness!

They also have a 5* Hygiene rating, all meals can be frozen, it saves you time and is totally affordable (but more on that later!). There is a wide range of ingredients to choose from and they even have a Vegan menu too! All the nutritional information for each meal is displayed on the side of the tub, so you know exactly what you are consuming!

If you missed me unboxing this mouth-watering box, then you can watch it here on our Youtube channel (don’t forget to like and subscribe!):

So, what did I get? The box arrived via DPD in a huge, sturdy box with the brand labelling clearly displayed on the lid. It also stated that there were food items and that it was fragile, meaning that you get reassurance that everything will arrive in one piece:

Once I had opened the box, I was greeted with some leaflets, one of which had the storage and heating instructions on, the other had a discount code (more on that later too!) and one explained how you can win free meals by leaving them a google review. Under these leaflets was a huge chunk of bubble wrap protecting the freezer bag underneath:

On opening the freezer bag, I noticed there were some ice packs keeping everything cool and the first thing I took out was a protein bar by Carb Killa in the flavour Caramel Chaos. These have an RRP of £3.99 and I eat them all the time! I have never tried this flavour though, but I have a feeling I will love it as I adore Caramel! This has over 20g of protein in it, which will be vital for me after a tough gym session!

There were 5 plastic tubs underneath the protein bar, all complete meals ready for heating or freezing. These meals were as follows:

Meal 1: Chicken, Brown Rice, Broccoli and Carrots in a Sweet Chilli Sauce. The Nutritional Information for this meal was displayed on the side of the tub and are as follows:

Calories: 388, Protein 38g, Carbs, 50g, Fat 4g. I had this one first, almost straight after the unboxing and I was so impressed at how much they managed to fit into the tub (which can also be reused). I don’t normally like spicy food, however the sweetness of the chilli sauce meant that the spice wasn’t too overpowering, and the veg and rice were amazing accompaniments. The portion size was a little too big for me, but I certainly felt full for ages afterwards and I know that my body will have benefitted from all the nutrients too.

Meal 2: Pulled Pork, Sweet Potato Wedges, Sweetcorn and Green Beans in BBQ Sauce.

Calories: 487, Protein: 38g, Carbs: 50g, Fat 15g. This was the second meal I had and it was absolutely amazing! I have to say that I normally am not a huge fan of Pork, however this melted in the mouth, the BBQ sauce complimented it perfectly and the sweet potato wedges were to die for! I enjoyed the veg too, as the sweetcorn added a bit of sweetness to the flavours. Big thumbs up for this one!

Meal 3: Chicken Thighs, Sweet Potato, Peas and Spinach in Sweet Chilli Sauce.

Calories: 487, Protein: 38g, Carbs: 50g, Fat: 15g. Again, an amazing portion size and nutritional value, I really enjoyed this meal. Chicken is my favourite meat and I love trying different ways to flavour and accompany it, as sometimes competition prep can be monotonous. Again, the sauce had the perfect balance of sweetness and spice to make it really tasty and I love spinach, so I was really happy to see that included as well!

Meal 4: Muscle Burger, Roast Potatoes, Broccoli and Carrots in a Piri Piri sauce.

Calories: 456, Protein: 39g, Carbs: 30g, Fat: 20g. Roast potatoes are my absolute favourite way to eat potatoes, so I was so excited to see them in this meal. Again, such an amazing portion size and just really healthy, really tasty food. I enjoyed the burger far more than I expected to, as I don’t usually eat red meat or burgers and the sauce went well with everything, without being too overpowering.

Meal 5: Meatballs, New Potatoes, Peas and Green Beans in Piri Piri sauce.

Calories: 456, Protein: 39g, Carbs: 30g, Fat: 20g. I loved the meatballs! They were really juicy (stop laughing already!) and again, the sauce and accompaniments really made this an enjoyable meal to eat. Healthy food does not have to be boring!

The prices:

So, onto the prices then! There are 2 different options as I mentioned at the start of the review- either you make the meals yourself (Randomizer option) or they send them to you pre made (Pick and Mix option). The prices are the same either way and work out at just £6 per meal!

There are some different meal options:

  • 5-9 meals: £6 per meal plus £3 delivery.

  • 15-19 meals: £6 per meal (free delivery).
  • 20-24 meals: £6 per meal (free delivery).
  • 25-29 meals: £6 per meal (free delivery).
  • 30+ meals: £5 per meal (free delivery).

If you use the code MMUK5 at the checkout, you get 5% off your order!

My verdict:

Sign me up already! This of you who interact and follow the page regularly will know that I am 2 weeks away from a bikini show and have been on strict prep since September. This can get so boring, especially with the same foods over and over again. I like flavour, I enjoy food and this helps to take some of the monotony away from meal times. It is perfect for people like me, who are training for something specific, but it is also absolutely perfect for people who are busy and don’t have time to cook a full, healthy meal from scratch. These can be stored in the fridge or freezer and put in the microwave (they can be cooked from froze-no defrosting needed!) and in just over 5 minutes, you have a tasty and nutritious meal ready to eat! Would I subscribe? Do you really need to ask? Absolutely, 100% YES! I love the idea of this, how convenient it is and how tasty it all is as well. Plus, the fact that you can tell them your likes and dislikes means you will never get foods you won’t eat! Vegans can get in on the action too!
