Date Night With A Book Review by Nazia – July 2018

A big thank you to James the founder of Date Night With A Book for sending me this exciting subscription package! I am a keen reader and love to read every opportunity I have, I literally jumped at the chance at reviewing for them when the opportunity was presented! Reading is my way of breaking away from reality and unwinding. Reading can be enjoyed just about anywhere and losing yourself in a twisted tale or a romantic fable is a great way to pass the time and for a moment forget about our daily struggles.

Box contents:

You’ll receive a beautiful parcel containing your brand-new book, along with a few extra surprises to enjoy while reading.

  • The Road – Cormack McCarthy

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is grey. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other.

  • Glass Coaster ‘Little things make you happy’
  • Options Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate sachet
  • Twining’s Mango & Strawberry tea bag

What I Thought

The Road by Cormack McCarthy

In some ways a harrowing and disturbing tale, but also one that does eventually show hope, as we follow a father and son on a journey across a post-apocalyptic landscape that is America. The unnamed father and son scavenge for food, look for shelter to survive and are ever-fearful of attack, especially as some of the few survivors have resorted to cannibalism. The two, pushing along their rusty cart, travel the road heading south simply because they must. The alternative is death. For a post-apocalyptic theme there was a lot less action and violence than what I was expecting however, there were a few dark and disturbing scenes involving cannibalism and such which were vividly described.

I’ll be honest, at first, I found the novel painful to read. It was so dreary and relentless, and the characters had no goal except survival: finding food, finding blankets to keep them warm through the cold winter nights, finding a safe place to sleep. The book also leaves a lot of unanswered questions; there is no explanation as to how the world became that way, where father and son are travelling to or why. All I know is that they have to keep moving in order to survive. You never get to find out the names of either the protagonists or any of the other characters in the book. However, I realised that to continue surviving, the father must pass on his knowledge and humanity to the boy. Ultimately, the love between father and son gives the book its core and offers up a bit of hope to the reader. It’s such a beautifully sad story of a father and son trying to survive in a world that is ravaged and lost and all they have left in the world is the love they have for each other.I wouldn’t say this was a pleasant read as some of the scenes depicted in the book are quite shocking but overall a gripping story that had my emotions all over the place. It is bleak and depressing, yet hard to put down. It is sad, yet also full of promise.

I’m a big fan of the post-apocalyptic genre and I was surprised by just how well this book was chosen for me. I have come to find that this book was also made into a film, which I definitely want to watch as I believe the best books are made into movies. It would be interesting to see how the film compares to the book.

Glass Coaster – ‘Little things make you happy’

This is a cute addition to this beautiful subscription package and the perfect place to rest my mug whilst delving deeper into the book I am reading. Made of delicate glass with the gold inscription ‘Little things make you happy’on a pink background it adds a little bit of understated girly sparkle.

Options Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

I can drink hot chocolate for days, so I really wanted to like this as it would be nice to have a low calorie hot beverage to enjoy. There is a hint of salted caramel, but it’s very subtle but this mainly tastes of sweetener making it very sickly sweet. Sadly, I wasn’t a fan. Maybe it has a place on a calorie-controlled diet, but I would rather have a real hot chocolate or even try a different flavour.

Twining’s Mango & Strawberry Tea Bag

A great balance of both strawberry and mango flavours that I found very refreshing and enjoyable to drink whilst reading.

These guys have thought of everything as this is another great addition to this package and exactly what I needed whilst reading my book. I don’t have many bookmarks as I end up losing or misplacing them, so I’m really pleased they’ve included one. The design is fun and reminds me of the stamps that you receive in passports when travelling abroad.
